View Full Version : When did you get into anime/manga?

1978. Yes, I'm pretty old (50+). I don't enjoy the Japanese stuff as much as I used to. Have gone back to much old and new Chinese productions and TV from The USA, Canada and The UK. I did get to see Death Note live movie at the local movie theatre and am awaiting part 2. Bleach was on last week but I didn't go. Tried Naruto but too Dragonballish and I went through that period already. I much preferred the American series Avatar. Current TV faves:

Star Wars The Clone Wars
Ben 10 Alien Force
True Blood
Dexter season 3
Stargate Atlantis
Smallville
Supernatural
Primeval (UK)
Fringe
11th Hour
Life on Mars (both versions)

among others.

Trying to get into this board but most fans are at least a generation or two younger than I so their likes are stuff I've never heard of. I was looking for newer space opera type shows but there seem to be none being produced these days. Just as well. It's hard to make like everyone in outer space will only be from Japan, much as it was from all those series I watched in the 70s and 80s. I'd think it would be more like a series like Firefly where the language/culture is a polyglot of stuff from English, Chinese, Japanese, etc.

I'll try to contribute when I can however....

Women friends of mine were into translating lots of manga into English and publishing them in APAs as far back as the middle 80s. Some stuff also turned up on BBSes at the time. We kept in touch using email, BBSes and Usenet newsgroups from the late 80's on. Prior to that it was entirely snail mail. Much of the translated work is unavailable anymore and their choices in manga have never been translated into English. A friend who owns a comic store in town here brings in lots of manga not just for the customers he has but also for local libraries. Not much of it is of any interest to me however. Most readers seem to be teen/early 20's women, though there is the odd male buyer/reader. I've kept all my old fanzines but they take up a lot of space. I've been involved in anime fandom from the beginning (c.1978) and have known quite a few interesting people over the years. Some have done quite well for themselves and others (like myself) have all but disappeared or moved along. I've probably enough material for a book but have no intention of writing one.

I was young... I can't remember when though... Before Middle school though.

I went over to my friends house, and he so happened to be Japanese.

He asked if I had ever watched Toonami before. Obviously, I had not. And all that was on at the time was The New Adventures of Jonny Quest. Nothing outstanding, or even anime related.

But soon after, they put on Dragonball Z. And I was hooked.

I watched Card Captors as a child. Grew up without knowing it was an anime. And finally as a teenager I stumbled upon an anime site and watched air. It was addiction from there.
