Not exactly breaking news, but I will keep people posted on the live-action version of Akira slated to have production start in 2009 and to have Leonardo DiCaprio as a lead and executive producer. I know he looks young, but isn't he in his thirties? How will he fit in, adapt to whichever lead he plays (presumably either Kaneda or Tetsuo). We will find out...

The anime was awesome, but very weird. I am not sure how they are going to make it into live action... lots of CG?

In regards to bigman, I agree, Hollywood has a tendency of taking novels (including graphic novels) and making a mess of it. But, as one author said (his name is escaping me at the moment) who had numerous books of his translated into a film when asked what he thought about the movies "ruining" his books, he said something to the liking of, "Ruined them? They're right there on my bookshelf." In other words, it does nothing to diminish the quality of the novel.
Also, in reference to Fats McBastard's post, it appears DiCaprio is all about Asia nowadays as he is feeding off the success he had when he took part in The Departed which is based on a Korean hit called The Chaser
Okay, onwards to the update -
Rumored Cast:
Leonardo DiCaprio - Kaneda
Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Tetsuo
Leo Lee - ???
Almost everyone knows DiCaprio. Gordon-Levitt seems slightly more appropriate for his role as he is in his twenties. Most people remember him from 3rd Rock from the Sun, but he has recently made a name for himself on the bigscreen. As for Leo Lee, I just remember him from Kung Pow lol. But he is Asian, if that counts for anything ;-)

Gordon-Levitt's proved himself a skilled actor, if you haven't seen Brick, go pick that one up. I'm just not confident that Akira wil translate well to live-action, just as I'm skeptical about the Dragonball movie. I think that anime should stay anime in its beautiful artistry and pure state. I really hope they don't try to ruin Full Metal Alchemist like this....
this is going to blow. so many great anime films/series, being snapped up for crappy dumbed down american remakes... ghost in the shell, dbz, blood, this, even fricken bebop.. i swear, if i ever hear tom cruise wants to star in a trigun film as vash, im going to shoot someone. im not looking forward too this in the slightest. the only thing im looking forward too is battle angel, because camerons doing it and hes f@#king awesome.

the only way all this could be worse is if i were to find out that kid from star wars ep 1 was going to be playing edward in a live action fma movie.. dont laugh, i swear it'll probably happen :frown:

WTF bebop to that's it Hollywood must pay :GRIM2A::flamethrowingsmiley
what i dont get is why japan is so eager to sell out to america by happily turning over the rights like this...i know its all about the money, but what ever happened to integrity and pride? does that always automatically go out the window when theres money involved?

It sucks but a big stack of money will always outway pride or integrity.

Keanu as Spike Spiegel?Gotta admit....that's not exactly such a bad pick.
I have a feeling the live-action Akira will surprise us and turn into a great if not at least a decent movie.Same can't be said if there's an actual live-action Ghost In The Shell movie.....I can't think of even one actress that can fit in the role of Motoko Kusanagi.(Seriously, not even one)
