agreed, i detest rap, it has no music to it, thus takes no skill to create, all you need are some words that maybe slightly rhyme, and even then they dont all the time.
give me the classics anytime.....

Culture of idiots? Don't blame the music. Blame the pathetic parents, the incompotent teachers, and the ignorant goverment. If you're so passionate about stopping idiocy, how about getting of your weak pathetic soap box and actually doing something rather than spewing the same garbage I can hear daily on the O'Reilly Factor; how about you raise your kids well, pass on your knowledge (if you have any), or call your congressman and demand better conditions for our children? Until then, you're no better than the rappers and pot smokers; another person spitting out words of idiocy.

Music by itself can't make people stupid but it can influence some people (not neccesary stupid people but close)
Stev01213
04-30-2008, 08:59 AM
My point exactly scias. It isn't the music. It's the upbringing. If people want to the help rid the inner cities of the "effects of rap", then they should give their money/time to the orginizations that work to improve the way of life there; become an inner city teacher, volunteer at a YMCA or Big Brother/Big Sister, or donate some of your money to charity. Sitting back and blaming the problems of the inner cities on music isn't a solution; it's an excuse and quite a pathetic one at that.
hmmm this is becoming a hot debate :smilewai:
good thing that this isn't much of an issue here in Finland :coolgleamA::coolgleamA:

you can't blame our government for this. it is merely the influence of rap (among other things). i am not blaming all of the worlds stupidity on rap just the vast majority of it's culture. all it is is stupid people bringing more and more ignorant and stupid people into this world. with the rap "policy" where all there is to do is have sex with anyone you can find, and shooting people for no damn reason. that is the idiocy of what used to be this great country!in country i mean the u.s.a..

I dont come from America, but It is my opinion that rap music/lyrics etc. can influence people. but does not make anybody stupid.
I listen to rap (or UK hip-hop) I do not like commercial rap. I also listen to alot of other stuff, I like to think I am quite eclectic. Therefore I am not bias against rap, but at the same time I do not believe that it always sends out the best message to young people. However, it does not make them stupid, it is the stupid people that give rap and hip-hop a bad image.
And in responce to shinichi's comment regarding skill:
Actual rapping does require a great deal of skill, I do not know what you have heard of rap but most commercial rap artists are watered down "brands", they don't need skill because they make money without it. For real skill listen to some good underground artists.

05-01-2008, 01:56 AM
I blame the government for not holding parents accountable in the way they raise and treat their children. Aside from that topic, rap does not make someone have sex with anyone they can find nor does it make them shoot people. Does looking at a picture of an anime character being raped on a subway train make you rape a women?
Stev01213
05-01-2008, 02:05 AM
In response to Saint, you are correct. Rap, or rather hip-hop, started off as way for inner city kids to express themselves in an artistic manner by creating beats and quick, sharp lyrical content. Some of the earliest rappers were the most clever, quick and talented people you could meet, able to create impromptu verses with a rhythm on the fly. It's unfortunate that "gangsta" rap hijacked the trend.
Saint
05-01-2008, 03:16 AM
Some of the earliest rappers were the most clever, quick and talented people you could meet.
Indeed, what you say is true, all music/lyrics can be used to spread a political or social message and hip-hop started by doing exactly that.
Where talent is concerned try searching youtube for "UK jumpoff" battles. Although the lyrics are obviously aggresive as these are rap battles, it takes a hell of a lot of talent to come up with rhymes that are quick witted, on the spot. So the talent still exists, unfortunatly just not in the commercial sector.
And zeldalover, that comment was a little overboard.
I listen to rap, I dont act like a faggot.

like da posters said b4, rap music has nothing to do with the character of a person's mind. It depends on how the person was raised. For example, i listen to different genres of music: japanese rock to american rap; so does this mean i gotta b a certain trait because American Society has given it an identity, no. Im just as hood as the next guy, but I was raised to act with good common sense.

I Kinda Like Rap And Maybe That's Why I've Been Forgetting To Use common Sense when it's needed lol
The only thing in the world that can make you dumb is yourself. I love rap and all kinds of music. The things you hear on the radio or T.V. are cattered to a certain kind of people hopeing they can go buy there stuff ect. Not all of ganster rap is bad either when NWA came out they were simply stateing what was happening in there area. Yes they threw in a bitch or i shot that fool, fuck the police, ect only for the benifite of radio play or getting money thats all rap is, people discribing where they live or telling us something in a different manner (isnt that all music). The only bad part about it is that people figure i can make a rap song so let me water it down and put it on the radio, TV,ect and make money off it and abuse the listing standers of the goverment and hurt our ears with the stupid lines and made up words. There are a handfull of rappers that can rap and make you wanna do better with your life but you'll never hear them on the radio,TV,ect cause not everyone wants to hear them to be inspired by a song. On the other hand rappers have gotten stupid after awhile and some of it is them and the other half is the producers saying (lets take that verse about how you work for your money and replace it with a new word you can make up).

Not all of ganster rap is bad either when NWA came out they were simply stateing what was happening in there area.
True NWA were good, but as you say nowadays there are alot of talentless people who want to cash in on the "rap game". And from what I have seen those who go under the gangster rap title are not that good. But then again I think Wu-Tang are great, especially 36 Chambers. So the way I see it I can find something I like in mostly every genre of music. Including gangster rap, it's just that rap music in general has alot to offer if people keep an open mind.

Everyone has a choice to be what they want and do what they want. No music or object or words from anyone mouth can do that. In the end its your own damn choice to except it and do the stupid things that some people do.

The only reason a higher percentage of persons that enjoy rap, in america at least, are stupid, is due to the parents teaching them ignorance and hate. If you would like, I'll give you my full explaination on the subject, but for now all I can do is back up the posts that've already stated, "Parents and environment." as the sources, should you desire more, let me know, otherwise this is me supporting, No it doesn't.

I think it depends. Rap initially started as a way a means of artistic and even political expression. Unfortunately, that era of rap swiftly ended and is now overrun by the superficial type that is so popular now. So in the beginning, no, it didn't make people stupid. Now? yes. very much yes.

I would have to say yes and no on this one. Rap itself has nothing really wrong with it, but really its the lyrics that make it dumb. Like talking about how the rapper has a million dollars or moving whores aside or any dumb crap like that really doesn't do rap justice. Like all music there are dumb lyrics and there are meaningful ones, only problem is that the majority of main stream rap is about dumb crap that doesn't exactly relate to most people.

I am a big fan of the artists which followed the early pioneers of rap (Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy) such as A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5, etc. Back then, they did not use terms such as "bitches," "hoes," and the use of the curse word "fuck" was only used sparingly. Their music had rich and meaningful lyrics. Not to say that all modern rap is crap, but a lot of what is viewed as the mainstream, played on a radio station every hour or so songs, are.

Rap is a symptom of a larger problem that has become a factor to its own source. Rap in itself and its origin has not caused the stupidity plaguing our nation, but since it has become so painfully omnipresent, it is contributing to the ignorance and delinquency of our youth. I don't for a second believe that ridding the world of rap will solve all our problems, but I definitely think it would be a step in the right direction. There is no poetry to it, it's some jackass spouting drug-fueled nonsense. There is no music to it, it's sampled beats and butchered covers of beloved songs. I hate rap music, but I hate the source of it more - a culture of ignorance and violence that needs to be dealt with before it consumes us.
Mantha
07-31-2008, 03:13 AM
I'm surprised at how many individuals are looking into the wrong factors, yes there's a common interest in this crowd of people, but the only thing rap can force upon a child is not ignorance, just a different language, if you take it apart and examine it, you're seeing the birth of a language shift, similar to what americans have seen dozens of times, other countries experience them too, but I THINK((not certain at all)) that it's a little less frequent. Anyways, Murph brought up a good point, the mainstream is horrible, I've met a few rappers who are in the same stylings as it's pioneers, and could appreciate the work, and have utilized it's specific flow a few times. Either way, I'm a metal-head to the core, and for me, you cannot beat a beautiful guitar solo.

Even some new rap music is actually pretty good, you just need to seperate it from the MASSES of shit rap out there.
I still stand by my opinnion that no type of music can affect anybody's level of intelligence.
the source of rap comes from poverty, and good rappers try to make political and social statements. Obviously the majority of people on this thread have only scratched the surface when it comes to rap and do not have the patience to dig a little deeper.

Let me provide a comparison. Numerous folks have brought up that rap people do not make people stupid, most recently, Alucard. I agree. Many people campaign against violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto IV because they believe they are precursors to causing people to commit crimes. Does that mean GTA IV, for example, makes people mug others, rob a bank, or in the most extreme case, commit a homicide? In my opinion, no.
This may be viewed as a scapegoat to addressing the real concerns of modern society. Does rap make people stupid or is our educational system in dire need of improvements (i.e. funding, etc.)? Crimes are often the result of impoverished individuals who are victims of a judicial system whichs labels criminals as menaces to society who, once committ a crime, are condemned from having opportunities to get a stable job, etc. Thus, it becomes a vicious cycle for these individuals. Having no job means they need to find an alternative means of making money. Alternatives equals committing crimes or having to sell drugs on the streets. We, as a society, need to examine our interior structure more than focusing on video games and raps as a precursor for violence or a decline in intelligence.

This is probably the gayest question answer.
And I mean "gayest" because intolerant, deliberately slanderous questions deservere equally intolerant answers.
Rap, like metal, rock, country, techno, whatever, can be the lowest, basest, most deragotory dredge in the world when created by idiots. It can be demeaning, oppressive, misleading, and ignorant when created by the like.
Rap is hardly alone. Do yourself a favor and type in "country music, n*gger" into kazaa. Or "neo-nazi punk". Or "John Mayer". Listen to that crap for 2 hours and then try to do calculus, let me know how it goes.

I would definitely say it makes people ACT stupid, but I'll also say that it's not something just anyone can do 'well' - there IS some effort that goes into putting some of it together, or at least there appears to be.
What irks me is that the general 'rap' style seems to be extremely angsty and arrogant - more often than not it's the artist being very self congratulatory and insulting everything else, or talking about the cruel state of the world as though it were either something new or something they had more experience in than anyone else, anywhere. I dont think disrespect and angst should be justified as an art form, but apparently it strikes enough of a chord with people that it sells.
Perhaps I'm odd in that I actually care about the lyrics and what they are saying, as opposed to just listening to the sounds and liking the fact that everything rhymes.

Somehow in most cases it does, it's like all of the legends of rap don't even seem to exist because our young society listen to processed rap that everyone wants to do, just to make a couple of bucks, there are a few "real" rappers out there, but they're being drowned by the hundreds of "Factory made" rappers, so to answer your question. It all determines what kind of rap music.
Me, I listen to anything, although I have to like it and I like a little rap and I have a lot of common sense, not to mention street sense and book sense. The influence of the media can have a lot of input to all of that.

rap is only viewed so negatively because 99% of mainstream rap is terrible... if all ive seen of rap is lil wayne and 50 cent then id agree and say it is stupid..
but.. i like all kinds of genres.. and theirs good and bad in every musical genre.. for someone to hate an entire genre of music in rap just shows ignorance and shallow mindedness... and people need to realise not ALL rap is as bad as the aforementioned mainstream acts.. The Rza is an absolute legend.. 90% of my friends had the dr dre chronic album.. and they dont usually listen to rap.. outkast are one of the innovative group i have ever heard (amongst ALL genres) ... N.E.R.D likewise..
so.. stop with the ignorance.. just because 50 cent is played on the radio ALL the time time doesnt mean ALL rap is rubbish like him.. hell even ice -t hates mainstream rap.
mainstream rap isnt rap.. its pop.. or crunk.. or something else stupid.. stop getting that mised up for the real thing cos thats all youve heard of rap... a good comparison would be me going out and listening to linkin park and saying metal is rubbish.
hmm i like how people can be so derogatory towards rap.. yet when i make a constructive argument for it it doesnt get past moderation... me smells bias :(

then what the hell is your comment doing in here? we're not looking at the moderated posts every damn minute. I was posting doujins so I wasn't approving them

yeah i wasnt sure how it worked here... im still a noob poster and so far whenever ive posted my comments have shown up pretty instantly.. this was the first time it didnt so i guess i just put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5
its also interesting to see that the majority of inconstructive and weak comments are being made by those who think rap makes people stupid. excuse me i smell an iron burning.

most people here dont like rap because they are ignorant and all they can say is "its retarted" wow good job totally making fun of music and calling it retarded.Do you want a award poor socially akward people? jesus christ does anyone think that calling rap retarded is a little bit oh I dont know....mean?Also I listein to rap mostly and im in college and graduated high school with a 3.8 soooo come on.

agreed buetifulred...
whats also funny though.. is you never hear rap fans saying how they hate rock.. and also musicians.. and i mean real musicians here.. i think i can safely say that even those of us that actually listen to rap wont count the likes of 50 cent as musicians... but those with actual talent.. take wyclef jean for example.. their inspirations come from a broad spectrum ranging in all sorts of music styles.. youll often hear rock bands in interviews doing the same....
point being.. it is pretty ignorant to discount an entire musical genre cos you think its stupid..
broaden your horizons people... music is made for everyone to be enjoyed.. i will listen to ANYTHING that sounds good in any genre.. much like i'll hate anything that sounds bad in ears (rhianna :p) but i would never say an entore genre was stupid just cos i heard two or three songs in that genre and didnt like them.. how narrow minded is that?

Rap is like Jackass. If you're already dumb, you'll do or want to do some of the stuff that's suggested to you. Personally I'm more of a fan of the older original rap from the early 90 and the 80. The new stuff with a few exceptions is too drab and unoriginal and just plain dumb for my tastes.

the 'new' stuff really isnt rap anymore to be honest.. its 'pop' and this kind of new rap spearheaded by the likes of 50 cent and lil wayne is trash.. i'll totallt admit to that.. but thats where the problem arises.. this generation of music fans have grown up in a bad era.. the current dumbing down of western civilisation reaaally shows because i can bet you at least 90% if not more of those same people just here lil wayne and 50 on the radio and go omg THAT SUCKS.. = RAP SUCKS ..
which really isnt the case.. Radio played 'wanna be a gangsta look at my hoes pop rap' sucks.. even rap fans will agree with you all there..
but if they are so narrow minded into thinking thats all rap is then its a shame it really is..

i been between all kind of "so called good rappers" but actully they were just horrible to even listen at, + the fact the radio was non stop on Rap crap. actully got me insane but i controlled myself and just putted on my mp3 and ignored it, But they just look at you try to think of stuffyur wearing that happend try to create a little Rythm but its just so Boring. you can yell and riddle anything at someone but still doesn't mean its music cuze the beats at Rap aren't rly like im getting down to this i like it. its just pure Text based not Music...

[QUOTE=Sieger;108437]you can yell and riddle anything at someone but still doesn't mean its music QUOTE]
i could say the same about ac /dc, rammstein or motorhead. particularly rammstein.. if anyone tells me hes singing as oppose to just shouting and yelling theyve lost the plot..
you could say but at least the create their own music.... im sorry but they just sound like some kid banging on tins and pans and genrally just noise..
but notice how i wont say that 'metal' sucks.. firstly because i cant bring myself to say such an ignorant coment.. and secondely i might detest rammstein or ac /dc but frankly theres a lot of stuff out their i DO like
like i said most of the made for radio and 12 year old kids rap does suck in this day and age.. im not saying oh youre all wrong for not liking it.. you shouldnt .. i'm just saying be more open minded about it you one day may here something you like... (chances are it WONT be on the radio) and seriously you cant tell me outkast just shout and yell and have no musical talent... seriously.. but then saying that .. tbh.. im not sure if they are classed as more alternative than hip hop

True. Or they go OMG that's great and I wanna be just like that. Like you said the dumbing down is evident in the music but is also evident in the youngins who believe what that musid is telling them. I can't say it was totally spearheaded by Half Dollar and Small Wayne. Don't you think the decent began a little sooner with the 90? I mean as in that's where the divide quality and crap began.
For the record, Eminem and Cee-lo would count as guys I really think are cool. Always listen to their stuff.

09-24-2008, 04:09 PM
yeah eminem has talent unlike his mate 50 whos only famous cos hes his mate lol.. plus 50 sounds worse as a rapper than mace and puff daddy put together...
cee los been good ever since goodie mob.. see now THAT shows that the older generation of artists such as cee lo.. such as wyclef CAN go totally mainstream and still sound good... thats because even though some may say they have sold out i say meh ... if the music sounds artistic and innovative it doesnt matter if it sells 40 singles or 40 million to me..

i also CANNOT stand black eyed peas... even when they first got big with joints and jams and everyone was loving it i was like.. this is kinda shit.. it sounds like a REAAAAALLLLY BAAD tribe called quest or de la soul knock off...
why no one listened to me then i will never know.. but i was right.. when they got fergie on board and got really big they were TERRIBLE! seriously theve gone frm sounding like a bad tribe called quest knockoff to a bad britney knockoff... NOW thats the stuff that most proper rap fans will say is shite but non rap listeners will here and assume thats actually what rap is.. and omg.. it so isnt..
like for example.. id say the rza's beats are just as cold trippy and awesome as massive attack or portishead.. and i bet those are groups that most rap haters like.

ok so i just worked out a table that will explain EVERYTHING!
if youve listened to rap since or from the 80' s = you will still like rap.. although you will HATE 99% of the mainstream rap currently out there... but youre ears are still open to good artists and those 1 in 100 rap tunes that is mainstream but still good.
if youve listened to rap since or from the 90's = you will still like rap... you will probably appreciate more of the mainstream stuff out there than those form the 80's ... you might even like 50 cent... which those from the 80's will in general detest... but youre starting to realise that most rap out their in the mainstream is generally shite
if youve listened to rap since or from the 2000's = youre in one of 2 categories either 1. you love all the crap that most of us from the 80s or 90s will hate and think is sacrilege to 'real rap' you will think 'crunk' is cool and rhianna is 'hawt'.. those of us from the 80s and 90s will just put our heads in our hands and wonder wtf is wrong with you. ice t will come out and say mainstream rap sucks... he is correct.
or you will be option 2. you will only hear this kind of crap and like us rap fans from the 80's and 90's..as well as ice t.... will think this stuff sucks.... but because this is all you have heard of rap.. you will assume ALL rap is like this.. and be totally ignorant to all the good rap of both the past.. and the good rap that still exists but youve never heard of because its NEVER played on the radio.

there i think that explains it all :p

yes rap makes people stupid and if the powers that be in the legislative branch came togethere and decided that for the good of all man kind people should put all their taxes in a special stop stupid fund where the money would be put towards putting chuck Norris on teh streets to round house kick any that dare speak the retardent language of rap in the united states boarders in the face, then i would actually pay taxes!

Never found a reason in making music how badly they have it, or how nice their cars or how large boobies their "ho's" have, even tho they earn hundreds of millions every year etc.
Yet they sing how bad they have it or what car they can afford, I don't find that music any good, even tho it's quite rythmic sometimes. Music with meaning is the music thats good IMO. Sure there's probably alot of good rap, but I probably only heard mainstream rap, wich is terrible, so I'm gonna pull every rapper cross the "pity me I'm rich" line, sry but thats me.

I think to say that rap is idiotic is very ignorant and prejudice in itself. But i do get whrer eyou are coming from. most the stuff that plays on television is stupid and of course it does make people act like idiots and me myself i don't think rap is a genre it's an act that is in hip hop.
that mainsteam bullshit that you guyz may be familiar with is very idiotic i agree but some of the stuff that you don't hear takes alot of skill and talent to create (i.e. Talib Kweli, Madlib, J Dilla, MF Doom, Mos Def, Ghostface, i can go on and on). But it's people not willing ot do the research on a specefic genre or culture that debates like these arise
Can't you say that Rock has it's share of idiots as well. Lets take screamo for example. Apparently all you need is a haircut to the side, tight pants, play some chords and scream like an idiot. there is no beauty or art in that. But it's a decendant of something that is and has been long forgotten.
Point is every culture, genre, and or tradition has it's share of misfits and foulness, but it always more than likely comes from something pure.
